HISTORY OF THE OFFICE
Date the office was established 20th November 1981 (League 1920)
Initiator of the Ombudsman office The Manager of the Uusimaa District Office of the Mannerheim League, Mrs Marja Wermundsen.
Steps Involved in establishing office
August - November 1981 planning work, 20 November 1981 the Children's Ombudsman was started

1993 The work and international cooperation against CSEC starts
1993 The work on sex crime legislation starts
1994 Development of the lawyer network starts
1994 Cooperation with Ecpat Europe groups starts
1995 The Children's Ombudsman was personally heard by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in November 1995 in Geneva - an on-going follow-up work
1996 The participation in ENOC cooperation starts in Geneva June 1996
1996 Research work on Child pornography starts
1997 Children and the internet programme starts
1996 A book on sexual abuse and exploitation of children was written by the Ombudman Helena Molander
1997 Nomination of the MLL Committee on the Rihjts of the Child to support the work of the Children's Ombudsman
Legislation establishing the office
Independent Ombudsman. Based on the Finnish legislation concerning legal assistance and consultation and on the principles of modern citizens society.

The Children’s Ombudsman sees that the following human rights of children and young people are upheld:

The right to be heard wherever their own well-being is concerned
The right to a status of their own in court, defined by the law
The right to physical and mental inviolability
