Report by the Child Rights Center of Georgia

The Child Rights Center was established within the Public Defender’s Office in April 2001. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and international conventions and arrangements on children provide the basis for the Center’s program of action. The area of responsibility of the Center is to advocate for the rights and interests of children and young people in society.

The Child Rights Center aims to:

Promote coordination and partnership between government and non-governmental organizations in protecting children’s rights;
Assist various governmental structures in developing an overall strategy on child rights;
Initiate the conduct of researches and studies on child rights highlighting the situation of children in Georgia;
Promote compliance of Georgian Laws on children and harmonization with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child;
Inform and educate young people about the Law. To fix the facts of the violation of the juvenile rights, play mediator role in their relations with the governmental structures;
Consult with children and other people seeking protection the rights and interests of children;
Introduce new approaches in addressing the situation of children need of special protection measures;
Promote the popularization of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Society have to know that children’s rights are integrated into the mainstream of the human rights;
Get acquainted with the experience of the other countries in promoting the Child Rights Center.

The Child Rights Center co-operates with different governmental structures; provides forums by the participation with NGOs working on children issues to ensure co-ordination and collaboration through regular periodic meetings.

The Center co-operates closely with children, young people and youth organizations. One of the most important tasks is to involve children and young people in public debates.

The Center seeks to provide a venue for children to express their views on current issues. Among the channels used are letters, telephone communication, Internet as well as through the children and Youth Parliament and other children’s organizations.

The Center actively participates in public debates, shaping opinion on important issues as well as influencing the attitudes of politicians and decision makers on protection of child rights.

The Child Rights Center provides an information data bank on children. The data bank includes research results, analytical database, statistics and programs on children.

The Center prepares articles on children’s issues, facilitates lobbying and arranging meetings, training-seminars and conferences on child rights.

The Public Defender’s Office will dedicate a chapter of its report to child rights activities.
